By night, junior high student Yoshimori Sumimura is a "kekkaishi"--a demon-hunter who specializes in creating magical barriers around his prey. By day, Yoshimori's got other demons to battle: an addiction to sweets and a seriously crotchety grandfather! Yoshimori's pretty neighbor and childhood friend, Tokine Yukimura, is also a kekkaishi, but their families are feuding over who is the "true practitioner" of the art.

It's true that this series sort of starts out with your monster-of-the-week stories, but that can be said for pretty much every shonen manga. Keep reading it and you can tell the mangaka feels more confident in making it more original. It's become one of my favorite manga series now.
Love this series

Mmmm, its been a while since the anime came out - I thought I recognized the plot. I love this series overall, and I am glad the manga is available. It was nice to be able to read the first few chapters online - its hard to find this one in the stores. This is one of those "must read" manga on my list, up there with Sailor Moon, anything by Rumiko Takahashi, and Dargon Ball.
Plot development

It's true, it might feel a bit Bleach-y at the beginning, maybe cuz they both exterminate monsters and the clothes are a bit traditional....
but not over till you reach the real plot of the story...
Nice manga BTW.... a must read....
Cool

Kekkashi has a good plot line. The first chapter was interesting. But it is not the best manga, I think any way. I like Rin-ne or Maoh: Juvenile Remix, or Death Note. Fullmeatle Alchemist is good as well, (the best).
A 2.5 out of 5. =(
Bleach & Kekkaishi

Nice it's being recognized BTW....
I've been reading both Bleach and Kekkaishi for a ling time now, I don't see much similarities at all; except maybe the main character being weak at first then getting stronger as the story progresses.... which is typical of most shonen genre manga... You will see as the story progresses and the plot thickens that Kekkaishi is on a whole different world than Bleach... .^_^.
Highly Recommended!!!

Should be at the top with all the other shonen mangas...
Certainly one of the best drawn manga out there...
Has a nice solid plot, may be slow at the beginning, but when the true plot opens up, you will surely be hooked...
IDK!!

it sounds more like a rip off of bleach. ill just stick with bleach. my opinion
Fun

Kekkaishi stuck out to me because it's title reminded me of Naruto's kakashi. Since then I've read the series and now its pretty obvious that I know kekkaishi is nothing like Naruto.
Its just such a cute and fun manga for the first few volumes that it almost becomes a bit tedious; that is until the plot finally decides to show its ugly face :]
Great Manga

This is another great manga from viz. I actually started reading it a few months ago and I'm glad it is getting the recognition it deserves. It has awesome art and a great story.
More Fans Needed!

Kekkaishi is the best shonen fighting series that few are reading. Yoshi is a meld between the typical (lots of power, unsure how to harness it) and unique characteristics like his aggressive defense technique and being a cake-baking otaku. Tokine is a strong female who doesn't fall behind. Their techniques are similar but their strengths are different. Battles are won with ingenuity and teamwork rather than a power up. Kekkaishi feels familiar but fresh. It is the familiar done right!
Demon Hunter
name:Sesho | posted 2009/07/23 AM08:11
This title should be right up the alley of Bleach fans, the major difference being that Kekkaishi has better art and less slapstick humor. Actually, it does have just as much goofy humor. And a powerful but reckless and untrained demon hunter protagonist that strives to master his skills in order to protect those he cares about. Seems promising.
